Educational and Cultural Cases
The educational and cultural function refers to the role that the education system plays in preserving and developing culture. It is one of the social development functions of education, primarily manifested in the following ways: selecting, transmitting, and preserving culture. Through formal curricula (courses prescribed in teaching plans) and informal curricula, education provides students with the knowledge, skills, norms, and values necessary for adapting to social life; selectively inherits cultural heritage; and preserves societal cultural patterns. Education also fosters the creation and renewal of culture. Furthermore, education facilitates the dissemination of culture. Modern education—especially inter-institutional exchanges among contemporary higher education institutions (including academic exchanges, sharing of resources, joint student programs, etc.)—directly promotes the spread of cultures across different societies or regions. Finally, education influences the stratification of “identity cultures.” Different levels and types of education endow individuals at various stages with a relatively distinctive “identity culture”—characterized by specific social expectations, self-identities, self-hopes, and knowledge structures.
